The Matterhorn is a beautiful peak of whitish marble from the Martin Bridge Formation, with bands of dark reddish Hurwal shale. A climber's trail ascends to the summit.

Activity Notes

Those willing to make the long drive east (6 hrs one way) are rewarded with a stunning alpine lake campsite and gorgeous views from the top of the Wallowas, one of the "7 wonders of Oregon."

Leader has reserved 2 campsites at Wallowa Lake State Park for the Friday night prior to the climb, $60 cost to be divided equally by climb participants.  Plan to drive out on Friday and join us at the campground so we can get an early start together on Saturday.

Saturday: Hike from Wallowa Lake trailhead to Ice Lake, 8 miles +3700'.  Set up camp.  Enjoy the views.

Sunday: Arise early to summit Matterhorn, +2400' in 2ish miles.  No special climbing equipment required, just helmets and trekking poles.  Return to camp, pack up, return to trailhead.  Drive home? or make camping arrangements.
