Activity Notes

The Prospectus

This course will introduce you to the core skills of map interpretation and compass use, taking you on a walking tour of Portland’s scenic Mt. Tabor Park.  To do the course, you’ll need to have a basic understanding of topographic maps (scale, contour lines, UTM coordinates) as well as compass declination.  It is recommended to take some time to watch through the Columbia River Orienteering Group YouTube channel videos on navigation.  Start with video #1 and work your way through.  If you don’t have the time to watch all of these don’t worry too much we’ll go over this together as well.

  • Bring printed copies of both the map and the course notes.  Everyone will need to have one copy of each.

  • Prospectus in a zip-lock bag
  • Clipboard or similar to write on
  • Compass with adjustable declination – make adjustments before arriving if you haven’t already
